Before we even see any of the trailer we hear Stallone's iconic deep voice and instantaneously attracts a wide audience because of his star appeal. The first shot we see is of Stallone signifying his importance to the film, and again using his star appeal to attract a much greater audience. Then we see the face of Jason Statham, again taking advantage of the star appeal in order to boost the films audience. The voice over corresponds with the shots that the audience is seeing adding some flow to the trailer. After the fade two more faces appear on screen, one is clear and the other has faded away, thus suggesting that this character is more evil than the others, the voice over also uses the word 'ghost' and the fade makes him appear like a ghost, adding some cohesion and flow to the trailer. Then you see the face of Jet Li another iconic actor who has a lot of star appeal, the use of all these famous actors generates a much bigger target audience, the reason that, up to this point, all the shots in this trailer have contained the faces of iconic actors is because they have been trying to hit home the fact that all these great people are in it and the reason that you should be going to watch the film is because there are so many iconic people in it.Then we see the raven in the picture, the raven on the silver skull is a rather ironic yet powerful image because the raven is like a bird of profit, stealing shiny objects and as this is the emblem of the expendables describes their reasons for being and tell the audience what the film is going to be about. Throughout these shots there has been a blue line across the screen from the reflection of the silver, showing that it is of importance and high value.
We then see some big bold text zooming in towards the screen, this shows the audience that this text is important and helps the trailer to flow because the actors are big and rugged and so is the text. The text is in a gold colour which helps to show that this film is very valuable. The soundtrack then becomes louder and more upbeat, creating a more action like feel to the trailer, we also start to hear the sound of bullets being fired, thus giving the audience the idea that there is going to be action in this film, the shot that they have used whilst this sound is going on, is a shot of a raven pirched on top of the silver skull, this shows the audience that it is the expendables aka the iconic actors like Stallone are kicking ass which is what the target audience for the film want to go and see.
We then see the same text again with the same effects, giving the trailer rhythm and flow. We then see Bruce Willis another iconic actor in British films helping to attract a bigger target audience. We then see Schwarzenegger on the screen adding yet more star appeal, Arnold hasn't been in a film for a while and although he's only actually in the film for a couple of minutes he will give the film a much bigger audience. The text is now trying to hit home the fact that this film has so many stars and is telling the audience to come and watch this film because it is the only time that all these great stars will be appearing together on stage which is appealing to the target audience.
Now we are seeing the actors names in the gold text showing how rare and valuable they are together, really hitting home that they are big names and that you shouldn't miss the opportunity to see them all in action, along with this you hear their voices over everything else to show that they are the most important thing in the film, they're the reason you're going to watch this film and they're the reason that the film is going to be a success. We then see a medium of the raven on top of the skull, where we can now see both the skull and the raven in full, giving the audience a vague idea of the plot, that these guys are out to kill some dude and make money from it. In the final shot we see the word expendables which has been hiding behing the skull all the time, the use of lighting and effects here is a way of showing that the expendables as, by making the light shine from gehind then the text casting a shadow, it makes the text look real, by adding realism to the text you also create realism for the actual expendables. The size of the text creates the impression that the actors are big and important. The way that the raven is flying towards you and the camera is zooming out to keep it in the picture, then finally flying over the camera gives the impression that the bird was fast. Finally they put on a plug to their facebook page in order to remind their target audience about the film and keep the audience interested.
