Entertainment Weekly Magazine
the main image of this magazine focuses on the focuses on the green lantern symbol, showing it twice in the image really pushes the idea to the fans of the comic book that this is all about green lantern
the masthead continues the theme of the main image changing the colour to green, the text of this magazine is bold which makes it stand out and this is helped because it's the biggest text on the page.
The main cover line links to the main image because of the use of colour on the text, it also uses a bold font in block capitals to really make it stand out. The main cover line utilizes the star appeal of the actor to appeal to a wider audience
the cover lines use key words such as special and sneak peaks these attract the audience to the magazine because it gives the impression that you are getting something special in this magazine that you wont get in others
the cover line at the top of the page uses the magazines more well known and more anticipated films because they are close to the title and maiin image, the two main eye catching points of the magazine, by placing these cover lines close, it becomes the next thing the reader will see and these big names make the magazine more attractive to a wider audience.
The cover lines down the side of the page take advantage of alternating colour between the cover lines to make each one of them more noticeable. The cover lines utilize shapes to make them more noticeable and pull the readers eye away from the main image to show the reader the other features of the magazine
Resident Evil Poster
The first thing you notice is the use of the star in the poster she is the actor that you associate with the resident evil series, she is the constant throughout the films, so when you see it you instantly recognise the film.
The overall genre of this poster is action
the stars pose represents the fact that this is an action film, the flying kick gives the idea that this is really about combat
the use of props in the image also shows that this film is going to be all about shooting stuff and blowing things up
the costume chosen shows that this is not your typical feminine women but a more action adrenaline junky to represent the action theme pursued by this poster
The broken glass represents that this film is an action, smashed windows are something that comes as a result of fighting and guns blazing,
the title uses the classic Resident evil film font that shows the audience instantaneously that they are looking at a sequel to the successful films that came previously.
The change of colour for the 3D highlights to the audience that the film is in 3D to intice the audience to go to watch it because of this effect
the title also represents a unique selling point, at the time of release this film was one of the first to be in 3D the way the text angles out gives the impression of 3D to sow the audience
the bottom of the poster has all the key titles and figures that helped to make this film in the classic tall text, as well as this there is the website to get the audience to check out more features of the film
Total film magazine cover analysis
the main image of this magazine uses a picture which utilises the male gaze theory attracting the reader to the magazine when it is the shop. However this magazine does not use any colour in its main image possibly to make the cover lines stand out more or possibly to make his eyes stand out more or the facial expression the key focus rather than the various colours used.
For both the main and normal cover lines they use special key words and phrases that make the magazine more attractive to a potential reader, words such as NEW or EXCLUSIVE make the reader feel like they are getting more for their money, something different you wouldn't get in other magazines.
The masthead uses a big text which makes it stand out and more noticeable which is important when looking at magazines in a store. The bold font also helps to make the magazine stand out more.
The magazine integrates its website and issue number into the title which makes it easy to find which is important because the website is a key part of advertising the magazines features and upcoming issues
this magazine does not contain a selling line, which may be because there are 4 different covers to collect, replacing the selling line
The main cover line is in a big text attracting the reader, and the use of white for the text makes sure that the readers attention is not drawn away from the main image so easily, the main cover line sets out the focus of the main article in the magazine, to give the reader a clear idea what the magazine is focusing on.
The cover lines at the top of the page above the mast head uses a large text and uses colour to attract the reader to them, this is important because this cover line shows the reader some of the more important articles, these main articles will be about the bigger, most anticipated films that are coming in order to increase circulation of the magazine.
The use of shapes make the magazine more appealing by adding extra bits and pieces to the page the circle shows the reader that there is the normal content of the magazine PLUS these extra bits added in to this months issue
Valkyrie Poster
The first thing that I noticed when I looked at this poster was the red stripe through the poster, this stripe performs multiple functions. The way that Tom Cruise name is linked to his picture using the red stripe is extremely innovative and clever, people don't need a link between the two but it adds that extra boost that makes it so eye-catching. The stripe also represents itself as part of the Nazi symbol which helps to show the genre and setting of the film. The stripe also integrates itself with the background, it describes the route into what appears to be the main room of Hitlers bunker, hinting at the plot.
The assorted film text has been used in an unusual manner instead of being at the bottom they've stacked it up the left hand side also unusual is how a piece of it has been situated away from the rest of it
the image used takes advantage of star appeal putting their most well known international actor at the forefront, whilst more nationally known actors are moved to the sides. The lack of colour in the main image represents the aura that nazi films have in them a dark time that needs to be lifted.
The selling line continues this theme about trying to lift the darkness by removing the source of it
the title uses a bold font but the lack of colour doesnt really make it stand out compared to the red stripe
Sherlock Holmes Poster
This poster uses the stars as a unique selling point for the film 1 really well known actor is enough to attract a wide fan base that will almost make the film an instant hit.
The overall colour scheme is one of overall calm, which in some way represents the way that Sherlock Holmes works however the cloudy ist that is showing at the bottom of th poster takes away somewhat from that feeling of calm, which helps to set out a tiny glimpse of the story. Th way that the actors have been placed in front of the text suggests that the actors involved are more important to the advertising process than what the film is based on.
The names of the actors across the top of the page helps to boost the appeal to a wider audience, even without them being a main feature on the poster, you can recognise them by name from previous films that you have seen.
The line 'holmes for the holiday' plays well on a common theme for the holidays.
The use of red on the film release date also plays with the christmas theme and makes it stand out from the rest of the poster
Film Star Magazine
This magazine is very different to the others I have analysed, this is the only one that uses plain white as the main colour scheme, it uses very few colours which, judging all of the other magazines I have analysed so far, could perhaps make it stand out more in the store, however it does follow most of the codes and conventions.
This magazine does not however follow the normal codes and conventions that are usually applied to the masthead, the masthead is not the biggest writing on that appears on the page but, however it could be argued that because the masthead has in a more defined, and striking colour that it is more noticeable than the bigger but less striking text.
This magazine also has an interesting choice of main article to feature on the front cover of the magazine. If you look at the cover lines at the bottom of the page, it includes more well known names and big film titles that you would perhaps see on the more well known magazines. This may have been done because this magazine is trying to capture a different target audience than the main magazines.
The main image follows the codes and conventions established by the other magazines, the main image directly relates to that of the main cover line the use of the long shot accurately depicts the type of movie that they are showing it combines a sci-fi genre with a dramatic story telling film.
The selling line depicts accurately how the magazine seems to target a different audience than the main magazines, the phrasing of the selling line shows clearly shows that this magazine is different from other film magazines.
The cover lines on the front cover include several famous names that will attract the reader to the magazine, the cover lines are also the source of what little colour exists on the page, this helps the reader to identify what there will be in this magazine.
Sky Movies Magazine
The masthead is in its own unique font, that is well known from the sky box adverts on the TV, which makes the magazine easily recognisable in a shop, and the well known brand will attract plenty of readers.
The main image is of a well known actor which helps to attract a bigger audience, her outfit is a very light colour, suggesting to the audience that she is a fair, soft, kind person. Her make up also suggests the audience that she is also vibrant. The photograph has the actor looking straight at the audience, this is done to engage the reader. The use of lighting in the photo makes Emma Watson the focus of attention, this helps to show her star appeal and make her the image of perfection that the people are used to seeing. The contrast with the car has an interesting effect, perhaps showing that this actress is a burst of sunshine in a dark time.
The main cover line is in the second biggest text on the page and is placed over the main image drawing your eye to it, this main cover line uses a highlighted 'exclusive' to give this main article that something extra special, that this is the only place to find this article, the reader will then be more inclined to buy this magazine.
The cover lines are given a highlighted title so that they stand out from the rest of the text, this is done to highlight what you will be getting from this magazine and really make it clear to the reader that all these really interesting topics are featured in the magazine without having to find the contents page.
The plus symbol acts is used to act as incentive for the reader to buy the magazine because it tells the reader that you are getting more for your money if you buy this magazine.
The left third of the page has several things that will attract the reader to this magazine when it's in the shop, at the top of the page there is the word 'win' with the exclamation mark, this will attract the reader because they will want a chance to win something, also the word Sky of the masthead is visible in the left third so readers will automatically see that they are looking at a sky product.
Black Hawk Down Poster
The soldier in the front of the picture is not shown with his gun blazing away or in an action situation shows us that this is not going to be another war film but has a more in depth story to it than going out to kill some rebels. The mise-en-scene does keep the aspects of an action film, with the army uniform and rifle to show those who like action films that this movie is for them. The expression on the soldiers face, is not that of a man who's drunk on action, but a troubled one helping to develop the sense of a story line.
This poster's colour scheme is very unique, using only orange and black, the colour scheme helps to establish a horizontal rule of thirds. The use of the black at the top of the poster shows how there is darkness upon them in the film and the orange around the soldier and the helicopters is showing us how they are fighting to lift the darkness and wiping it off the face of the earth. This helps to show the audience that this film is not just another war film with mindless violence, but has a more meaningful storyline behind it. Which attracts both those who like action films as well as those who like a film with a good story line and more meaning.
The helicopters in the background and the helicopter that the soldier is in, giving the impression that you are getting a zoomed in view of the helicopter squadron. The way that the brightest light is around the helicopter shows you that the Americans are the good guys and they've come to solve all the problems and lift this period of darkness.
The slogan picked for the film also helps to represent that storyline aspect of the film in order to attract a much wider audience. The slogan will also attract those war fanatics who love a good war film and this classic military phrase will attract them to the film. The font used is an army stencil like font, but not the exact stencil, this is done to reinforce the fact this is not just another fighting action film without much of a storyline.
Up Poster
An interesting thing about this poster is the way that the main title has been made to look horizontal, so that It looks like it is also up high in the sky, this is different, and so can attract the audience away from other poster because of this different style. The font of this text is very unique not hard corners all sort of soft, by doing this it makes it look like a cloud to give the poster that bit of realism and its own unique little style again. All of the text used in this poster is giving the impression of clouds and sky, giving the poster that soft and cuddly feeling, this attracts the young kids who this poster will be aimed at.
The main image is cleverly done to show all the main characters, whilst showing the audience who is most important in terms of the film, by putting the most important at the front and then dropping back. This tactic also gives the audience idea of the characters relevance in the storyline. The characters selected for this poster are also important, this poster makes them look like a family, and by doing this they make the film more appealing to families with kids.
A wide variety of colour that is used in this poster is used to attract a wider audience and to make the poster much more attractive to the viewer. Whilst attracting a wider audience it also makes the poster more appealing to young kids who will want to go and see the film and the more kids you get to go and watch a film, they more adults that will have to go and watch the film.
Placing the disney pixar logos is something that very few companies can do with such meaning, world famous for their animated films, this acts as star appeal to all the young kids who love disney films
SciFiMagazine
The masthead is in it's own font that will make it easily recognisable in a shop, so that a fan of the magazine can easily pick it out but the title makes it obvious to the reader that they are going to like this magazine. The dot of the i is done in this special planet style, so that it improves the image for the magazine and gives it that extra look of professionalism.
The selling line is used to help sell the magazine to potential readers, this helps to increase the number of readers, also installs a confidence in the reader that the magazine will be quality.
the main image uses a famous actress to attract a wider audience and use the sex appeal that the actress has gained over her time in film to attract a male audience, which this magazine will be aimed at. The main image is used to engage the reader, in order to attract the reader when it is sitting among other movie magazines. The choice of clothing is important to, a revealing top makes the magazine more attractive to the target audience.
The main cover line is in the second biggest text on the page, this is done to draw the readers eye to it and show its importance to the magazine. The main cover line does not need to be put over the main image because the actress' star appeal is such that the target audience will know who this person is, showing off the stars that this magazine can attract.
The use of the red highlighting for the cover lines attracts the reader to these points, the highlighted words will usually be to signify that this magazine has something different that no other magazine has, or something particularly important to this months issue of the magazine, this makes the magazine more appealing to a reader, who when has a choice between magazines, will go for the one that has the most exclusive stuff.
The left third of this magazine contains lots of red which sticks out from the blue's that are on the rest of the front cover. This makes it more eye catching when it's in the shop, so it sticks out from other magazines, as well as this it contains a picture which also helps to attract the eye when the magazine is in a shop.
SFX magazine
The colour scheme for this magazine is used to attract it's target audience, the use of the red's and yellow's is combined to give the look of an explosion so that it gives the audience the impression that the magazine is full of action, and that the film's that the magazine focuses on is action based.
The masthead follows the codes and conventions of a magazine front cover, the text is the biggest on the page and directly shows the audience that if you like films full of special effects, then you should buy this magazine.
The main coverline of the magazine, follows the codes and conventions, it's the second biggest text on the page and it directly relates to the main image, this attracts the audience to it and helps to provide extra info about the film before you've even read it, the font of the text is similar to that of the actual film, this helps the audience to relate to the film.
The main image takes advantage of the star appeal of the actor, making the audience more likely to buy it. The main image also uses the unique selling point of the film, coming from an angle that other films don't have, by doing this it makes the magazine more interesting to the reader, thereby making the reader more likely to buy the magazine in a shop. The image they have chosen looks directly at you, which engages the reader when they are looking for a magazine to buy in a shop, so you are more likely to buy it when you see it.
The coverlines all have a heading in a white, bold and capital font and highlighted in red, which attracts the audience to them, the use of language on the coverlines suggests to the audience that they are getting more for their money and that the magazine has got a lot more in it.
The use of Stars between the names, increases the idea that the magazine has lots of famous people in it. As well as this the special coverline 'massive marvel meltdown' gives the reader the impression that this magazine is a special edition, enticing the reader to buy it.
The left third of the magazine is full of coverlines and is the only other part of the magazine to have pictures, this is done so that when the magazine is stacked up in the store with lots of other magazines it stands out more than the other magazines.

This poster also takes advantage of the cast that are going to be in the film, this poster is tailored especially, so that the target audience knows that all these great names are going to be in this film, so you don't want to miss it.

Comedian Poster
The Main image shows Jerry Seinfeld, with a microphone, this is juxtaposed against the background of an empty street, this creates the effect that he is a stand up comic who has lost his way and is alone, this is also reinforced by the expression on his faced, which looks puzzled and confused. The dark and faded colours create the effect that things are dark and dreary. The use of a high angle shot in this image creates the effect that this person is insignificant to the world around him, this effect is reinforced by the way that this person has been made to look much smaller than his surroundings. In the poster this person is the only part of the image that is in focus, showing the audience that he is more important to the film and he plays a significant role whereas his surroundings do not.
In this poster the title has not been placed at the top of the page, instead the words Jerry Seinfeld have been placed their, this is done to attract the films target audience, a persons natural reaction is to start at the top of the page, so when someone looks at this poster they will see the words Jerry Seinfeld and because the target audience for this film will be people who like comedy, they will know who he is and will then want to go and see the film. The title is in the biggest text to make it clear to the audience that this is the films title.

Toy Story Poster
The first thing that you attracted to in this poster is the big 3, this is because it is the biggest thing there and is also the most colourful. This poster is very different to other poster because it uses the fact that the toy story series has been so successful and is now so well know that they do not need to include any image as such and the text and colour of the 3 will be enough for the audience know what film it is.
The text above the 3 is still in the same font, really giving the poster that Toy Story feel, but also giving the audience a quick preview as to the plot of the film, this creates intrigue and leaves the audience wanting to know more about the film, making them want to go and watch it.

Empire magazine
The Masthead uses the Empire text and font, so that as a reader you know that you're looking at a good magazine, it is also the biggest text on the page so that you are drawn to it in a shop, also the masthead needs to be in a big text because it needs to stand out from other magazines in the shop.
The selling line, helps the magazine to sound more professional and established, helping to improve circulation, and when looking at a magazine as a consumer seeing the words 'the worlds biggest movie magazine' installs a confidence in the reader that this magazine is going to be good.

Total Film magazine
This magazine follows the codes and conventions of movie magazines, the masthead is the biggest text on the page. The text is in a big bold font in block capitals, the masthead will be in its own font and of its own design so that it is easily recognised when its on the shelves in a shop.
The main image uses the male gaze rule to attract the films target audience and increase magazine sales for that particular month. They use a medium shot in this photo, allowing you to see more of the person and show off the fact that there is this cool guy in a suit with weapons and cool glowing lights, this is done to attract the films target audience. The way that this image is taken, it makes it look like he is looking right at you, so when the reader picks up the magazine, they are immediately engaged by the magazine compelling them to read it. The way that they have contrasted the red and golds against the blue and black background gives the impression that iron man is a force of good in dark times as well as this it really makes the image stand out from the rest of the page.
The main cover line is placed over the main image which is fairly common in a magazine and helps the reader to easily identify the caption with the film, which makes the magazine more reader friendly, increasing the chance that you will read it. The gold text makes the text look more valuable and important, like it is secret information that will not be found in other magazines, saying to the reader that if you don't buy this magazine and read it you wont be privy to this information.
Like most magazines, the cover lines have been spread around the magazine, making the magazine look less cluttered, and filling in the empty spaces that are not covered by the main image. The cover lines have been put in a block capital bold font to make them stand out and make them look more important than other info on the page.
Unlike most magazines, this one does not have a selling line, which leaves the reader without that extra confidence and incentive to buy the magazine.
The cover line at the bottom of the page acts as a et more for your money kind of thing, where if you buy this magazine you'll be getting all of this great stuff attracting the reader to this because they will think that by buying this magazine they will be getting all of this content.
The cover line at the top of the page is in a gold text because it is being advertised as something special that will only be found in this magazine, the bold text is used to show the importance of this text and by doing that makes it more appealing to the reader.
The left third of this magazine contains the word TOTAL in block capitals and in bold, this unique style of text in the left third makes the magazine easily recognisable when stacked on the shelves in a shop,it also contains the only other image on the front cover with Ricky Gervais in it and with all the advertising that he has been in on TV recently makes his star appeal substantial and I you liked his new show you are more likely to buy this magazine. The cover lines that have been put in the left third are used to attract a wider audience, the marvel cover line will attract one type of audience and the sex and violence cover line will attract a different type of audience.
Clash of the Titans teaser trailer
The establishing shot is in the desert, giving the audience an idea of where the film will be taking place, mise-en-scene gives the impression that this film takes place in the mythological times. The main colours in the image are yellow, brown, black, with no bright colours, any colour in the image is faded, this gives the impression that this happened along time ago and gives it a desert like tone. This shot is designed to show the audience the spectacle of the film, they are trying to get the audience to come and watch the film because its going to be one big spectacle and to show this the trailer is full of CGI effects and action. The low angle shot of this strange man and his fellow soldiers, makes him look powerful and controlling, also because this main guy is in the foreground, it makes him look more powerful than the rest of them.
After the opening credits, there is again clever use of special effects to create this idea of the spectacle, the lighting is very important in this shot, the darkness creates the feeling of evil and the fire red, leaking out from behind the building again creates the sense of evil and death. The building helps to define the rule of thirds as being horizontal rather than vertical. The snake tail moving in the first shot and then cuts to a shot of the tail moving again, this helps adds flow to the trailer.
This shot then switches to a vertical rule of thirds clearly shown by the two men and the tail, this then highlights the two thirds that are at either end, this makes sure that you are drawn to the most important things in this shot, the tail and the person. The flickering the light in the background, this makes a fire effect, which gives the impression that stuff is burning, to show the audience that this is a bad place.
This shot makes the spider look all the more powerful whilst making the human look weaker as the camera rises going to a high angle shot, this helps to establish who the powerful race is in the film, giving the audience an idea about the story behind the film.
This low angle shot makes this human look more powerful and stronger, this is done to show the audience that he is more important and a man who can beat the forces of evil.
This shot again shows the target audience the idea of the spectacle, it makes the objects on screen much bigger increasing the spectacle and showing the audience that they need to view this spectacle.
This shot of the scorpions stinger is used to show the audience in a very blunt way, look at the cool special effects we have on show for you to see, so come and watch the whole film to see the entire spectacle.
This shot is very different to the rest of the trailer, this shot has white back light shining on this person to show the audience that he is the important person in this shot. The low angle shot used her creates the effect that this man is very powerful, by doing they show the audience that this man is important and strong. The bright and shining effects on the clothing, shows the audience that he is good and heaven like and possibly more powerful and important because everyone else in the trailer is in raggedy, dull clothing.
Again this shot of the giant scorpions attacking the humans doing cool and unseen things this shows the audience that these special effects are so brilliant that you have to go and watch this film. The amount of shots that the scorpions get in this trailer shows the audience that these scorpions are going to feature a lot in the film and because you are going to watch this film because of the spectacle, you will not be disappointed as a viewer.
The text used has a sliced effect to it, by doing this it adds to the idea that there will be lots of fighting in the movie. The light in the background and they way it splits through the sliced edges of the text, creating the feeling of the mystical powers featured in this film.
Throughout the trailer, the cuts between shots have been timed with the music, this helps to give the trailer some flow and it also helps to dictate the pace of the trailer, if they want to give the sense of action the music becomes louder and a quicker beat which in turn shows more shorter shots adding pace to the trailer.

Valkyrie Teaser Trailer
The establishing shot is a desert with two crosses, this is done in order to set the scene and give us an idea about the film.
This shot here is used to show the audience which period the movie is taking place, the mise-en-scene clearly shows the audience that this film is taking place during ww2
This over the shoulder shot, shows us who the main character is, his face is the first that we see, so he must be important to the film, this shot also takes advantage of star appeal, Tom Cruise has established himself in action movies, so you'll want to go and see the film.
Over a series of fades and using the voice over, they give the audience a clear understanding of what the film is about, to set the scene and make the audience more interested in what's going on and whats about to happen in the trailer. Whilst doing that they also show close up shots of famous actors, to boost the star appeal of the film such as Bill Nighy.
After the explosives have been armed the shots cut in time with the clicking of a clock, to create a countdown, to create tension and keep the audience engaged in the trailer. From her on in, the countdown timer dictates the pace of the trailer, and quicker ticks represent that time between the shots is passing much faster than when it is slower and the events they are showing you are closer together, all of this helps the trailer to flow.
The shot of the briefcase is an iconic shot, because everyone knows the plan of the German high command to kill Hitler by putting a bomb in his briefcase, so this adds realism to the trailer. The quick zoom over a short distance highlights the importance of this briefcase, and the audience will want to know, what this briefcase has to do with events even more.
This shot of Tom Cruise walking through his own name is a really cool shot, that just adds that little something extra to a trailer, something different that you don't often see
Towards the end, the way that everything speeds up and you begin to see less and less of whats going on, but seeing more and more guns and military uniforms, adds tension , engaging the audience making them want to see more.
This final shot of the firing squad, aiming and shooting their rifles, really leaves the trailer on a cliff hanger, leaving the audience asking all sorts of questions, is he dead? Is he alive? Who did they shoot? And so on... forcing the audience to go see the film to have their questions answered.
UP teaser Trailer
The view given to the audience is a blue sky, with only a few clouds, giving the impression that it's a lovely day and everything is happy, thus appealing to the film's target audience. Then you see a lonely balloon that, is in a bright pink, the use of a balloon attracts the target audience because, young kids like balloons, so they'll like the film. Two more balloons then rise past the screen, this again attracts the target audience because kids like balloons, also the bright colour of the balloons gives the impression that everything is happy and cheerful which young kids like to see in films. Then there are a lot of balloons, in lots of bright colours that will be liked by young children, attracting their target audience. Then you turn from the perfectly natural to the completely ridiculous, a house in the sky, young kids may find this funny and may make them interested in the film, they will want to know why there is a house in the sky and their curiosity will make them go to watch the film.
Smurfs Teaser Trailer
The first thing we see is the camera flying over the ocean, giving the impression that we are up in the sky, making the sea look small. Then it fades to the text which is in block capitals giving the impression that the trailer is about something big and important. Then we fade to a shot of an egyptian monument which gets hit by blue, this adds a bit of mystery because we don't know why this is happening but gives the impression that it is something big and powerful. Then more fading in and out leads us to looking more iconic monuments that get hit by the blue power, this hits home the fact that this is something big and powerful. Then we come in from a birds eye view shot, zooming in to a high angle shot then a cut to a ………… shot, which represents the city as being small and insignificant to this unknown power. Then they hit you with the comedy twist, they've been building up that this film is about a big powerful force, but it's actually a bunch of small blue creatures outsized in a city.
The Comedian
The first thing we see in this trailer is a dark room with only whats inside the room on the other side of the glass, showing the audience that what is the other room is more important than whats on the side of the camera. In the shot you can only see only one persons face shows us that he's an important person in the trailer. In this trailer there is only diagetic sound adding realism to the trailer in order to interest the audience. Unlike other trailers, this trailer is about making the trailer for a film this creates the feeling of real life, but in actual fact is not. This mans clothes are just like a normal mans clothes, giving the audience no reason to believe that he's famous in any way, adding realism to the trailer. Then you hear the first words from this man in the picture, and it becomes clear who it is, although most people only know him as the voice over guy.
This low angle shot of the voice over guy show how he is the focus of attention in the trailer with the way that all the lighting above is all shinning on him.
The final thing we see is text wit the film title and an idea about the film with the voice over guy's name to add the star appeal, many people would not be interested in this film, but because they tell you that Jerry Seinfield, the famous voice over guy, is in the fame people will go and watch it.
Toy Story 3 Trailer
In the first shot that you see, there is a cloud wallpaper along with a wooden floor that looks like it could be a field, this is showing us that this room is like a world for the toys, that is very similar to our world, just smaller. Then woody's boots come into the screen, they only show you the boots, because its cartoon star appeal, you know who it is and they take advantage of that. Then they start to introduce all of the main characters from previous films. Then you cut to a shot of the toys using other toys showing a playful attitude that will be popular among their target audience (kids). Then they play on the classic woody – buzz rivalry that has existed since the first film, thus showing that this film is going to be as good than the others, and give the audience a little reminder of the story. All of the colours used in the trailer a bright and cheerful to show that this film is a happy film that is going to attract the target audience.

Pirates of the Caribbean teaser trailer
This trailer is very different from most trailer because it is just one continuous shot throughout. The shot is zooming in which shows that the person on the screen is important. The fact that we only see this one person in the trailer shows the audience how important he is. The colour of his clothes shows us that he is a untrustworthy and cunning like fox. The trailer also takes advantage of the fact that the audience knows what happens in pirate films so theres no need to go show all of the different aspects. The forest background tells the audience that the future is unclear, that you don't know whats going to happen in this film. Jonny Depp tells you that Kiera Knightley is going to be in the film rather than showing her, partly due to the nature of the advert and partly to keep some mystery to the film. The bottle of rum adds verisimilitude o the trailer, to make the audience believe that they are looking at a real pirate. After Jonny Depp, you see the text zoom in from the darkness, like it is an under water monster, giving the audience a small clue as to a twist in the film, the text is also in the classic pirates of the Caribbean font and style to show the audience that this is the real deal. The way that the light shines in from above the surface on the writing tells the audience that this film is a bright light at dark time, effectively saying this film is better than any other so go and watch it.
The Expendables Teaser Trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VgJtfffrl0
Before we even see any of the trailer we hear Stallone's iconic deep voice and instantaneously attracts a wide audience because of his star appeal. The first shot we see is of Stallone signifying his importance to the film, and again using his star appeal to attract a much greater audience. Then we see the face of Jason Statham, again taking advantage of the star appeal in order to boost the films audience. The voice over corresponds with the shots that the audience is seeing adding some flow to the trailer. After the fade two more faces appear on screen, one is clear and the other has faded away, thus suggesting that this character is more evil than the others, the voice over also uses the word 'ghost' and the fade makes him appear like a ghost, adding some cohesion and flow to the trailer. Then you see the face of Jet Li another iconic actor who has a lot of star appeal, the use of all these famous actors generates a much bigger target audience, the reason that, up to this point, all the shots in this trailer have contained the faces of iconic actors is because they have been trying to hit home the fact that all these great people are in it and the reason that you should be going to watch the film is because there are so many iconic people in it.Then we see the raven in the picture, the raven on the silver skull is a rather ironic yet powerful image because the raven is like a bird of profit, stealing shiny objects and as this is the emblem of the expendables describes their reasons for being and tell the audience what the film is going to be about. Throughout these shots there has been a blue line across the screen from the reflection of the silver, showing that it is of importance and high value.
We then see some big bold text zooming in towards the screen, this shows the audience that this text is important and helps the trailer to flow because the actors are big and rugged and so is the text. The text is in a gold colour which helps to show that this film is very valuable. The soundtrack then becomes louder and more upbeat, creating a more action like feel to the trailer, we also start to hear the sound of bullets being fired, thus giving the audience the idea that there is going to be action in this film, the shot that they have used whilst this sound is going on, is a shot of a raven pirched on top of the silver skull, this shows the audience that it is the expendables aka the iconic actors like Stallone are kicking ass which is what the target audience for the film want to go and see.
We then see the same text again with the same effects, giving the trailer rhythm and flow. We then see Bruce Willis another iconic actor in British films helping to attract a bigger target audience. We then see Schwarzenegger on the screen adding yet more star appeal, Arnold hasn't been in a film for a while and although he's only actually in the film for a couple of minutes he will give the film a much bigger audience. The text is now trying to hit home the fact that this film has so many stars and is telling the audience to come and watch this film because it is the only time that all these great stars will be appearing together on stage which is appealing to the target audience.
Now we are seeing the actors names in the gold text showing how rare and valuable they are together, really hitting home that they are big names and that you shouldn't miss the opportunity to see them all in action, along with this you hear their voices over everything else to show that they are the most important thing in the film, they're the reason you're going to watch this film and they're the reason that the film is going to be a success. We then see a medium of the raven on top of the skull, where we can now see both the skull and the raven in full, giving the audience a vague idea of the plot, that these guys are out to kill some dude and make money from it. In the final shot we see the word expendables which has been hiding behing the skull all the time, the use of lighting and effects here is a way of showing that the expendables as, by making the light shine from gehind then the text casting a shadow, it makes the text look real, by adding realism to the text you also create realism for the actual expendables. The size of the text creates the impression that the actors are big and important. The way that the raven is flying towards you and the camera is zooming out to keep it in the picture, then finally flying over the camera gives the impression that the bird was fast. Finally they put on a plug to their facebook page in order to remind their target audience about the film and keep the audience interested.

Resident Evil Afterlife Trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPj4zO6TA9s
The first thing that the audience sees is which companies helped to make the film, so that the companies will get recognition and increase the public's knowledge about their company bringing long term benefits, because people will go see films that they will make in the future. The establishing shot is a tracking shot of a lone plane flying over ice and water showing that whoever is in the helicopter is important to the film. Then there is a long fade to a point of view shot from the aircraft, showing this areas importance and relating this film to the last resident evil film where they were heading to Alaska, revealing some of the story to the audience who follow resident evil. Then there is another fade into a burning city, this adds mystery to the film posing the question to the audience, why the city burning? Which will engage the audience and keep them interested. The plane comes in from out of shot and flies toward the city, showing that the city must have importance in the film also. The plane flying over the hollywood sign, shows the audience where things are taking place. The jump zoom is used to show the speed the aircraft is travelling, that the camera could not keep up by tracking it. Then there is a very long fade, with a voice over explaining how the situation has changed since the last movie. Then the music suddenly becomes more upbeat and the next shot is of the plane again, the screen time that has been given to the plane so far in the trailer shows how significant the person is or how significant that the plane is to the person. Then there is a close up shot of a face, they have shown this person first because she is the most important person in the film. The mise-en-scene, swords is used to attract the target audience, who will go to see this film because they want to see zombies getting killed and/or blown up in as many ways as possible. The music then becomes more upbeat again as we see a shot of the titles, showing that the film has been filmed with the same technology as the most grossing film of all time Avatar, this is done to attract an audience and really wow the viewers. Now the trailer just becomes shot after shot of guns blazing, sword chopping violence that the target audience wants to see, with some momentary points to hit home the fact that this film has the best equipment and to tell you the release date of the film. It also shows you some of the key characters in the film with close up shots. Then it gives you the name of the film and 'coming soon' to keep the audience interested and keep them enthused about the film so they want to go see it. It gives you some important names linked with the creation of the film. Finally it shows you where you can link yourself with the film on the popular networking site facebook, so that they van bombard you with info about the film and so you can keep up to date with the latest developments and news about the film.

Black Hawk Down Teaser Trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_m-UBMKllA
The first thing we see in this teaser trailer is the company who have produced, distributed or had anything to do with the film his is done to clearly show the audience who has made the film and as such can generate publicity for their other movies. The shot of the sunset with the man and the writing, could be describing a country in decline using the sunset as a metaphor for a country fading into darkness. The next shot is of the american choppers against the sunrise, used to represent the very americanised view, that america can go anywhere and solve everything. The use of the clouds to act as a fade shows how the situation ahead is unclear. The next shot of the american soldier, along with the diagetic sound and jump cut, shows how alone these people are to create sympathy and add to the realism of the trailer. The next shot of the humvees driving down the road blazing their guns brings back the classic war film mood, this helps to attract the target audience. The shot of the soldiers getting off the helicopter also helps to attract the target audience. For the next series of shots there are more shorter shots used to increase the pace and lots of guns and action is shown to develop the theme of war and this helps to attract the target audience. The use of the voice and the words he uses helps to portray that these men start out as being alone in a distant land but as this trailer progresses they have to become unified to save themselves. This trailer has no voice over and instead uses text during the fades which in some ways makes the message that this trailer is sending more powerful. The text also helps to describe the film without the use of the voiceover which would spoil the mood that is trying to be set in the trailer. The trailer is very selective with the diagetic sound, not everything that you would hear is put in the soundtrack, this makes the scenes more powerful in portraying their message by allowing the audience to focus on particular aspects within the shots. The shots you see rarely veer away from the aspect of war, helping to balance with the soundtrack, which does veer away from war, but what they both have in common is that the both relate to death, which is really the message that they wanted to put across in this film that these people put their lives on the line for their country and no-one remembers it, this is also displayed very clearly in the text on the screen. The use of the tile of the film and then the words 'leave no man behind' really defines the message of the film this is done to put across a message and can attract the target audience using this classic war/army quote. The trailer shows the face of the main actors in the film, this takes advantage of that actors star appeal, increasing the number of people who will want to see the film. The trailer ends with 'coming soon' rather than a date, this is done to keep the audience on the lookout for the movie and keep them interested in the movie.
